ALMOST 400 bearded and jolly runners made a festive dash with a difference.

Crowds lined the routes of the 3km and 5km runs in Colchester’s Castle Park for the fundraiser yesterday.

The Colchester Hospital Santa Fun Run is an annual event, now in its seventh year.

Organiser Caroline Bates said: “It was a lovely and bright morning but very cold. Everyone enjoyed themselves.”

The runners gathered by the band stand in Castle Park and set off at 10am, following a course around the park and by the river.

The fastest finished within 19 minutes, but as it was a fun run, their names were not recorded.

Caroline said: “There were quite a few spectators and many cheering. We had lots of babies in pushchairs, a couple of guys in wheelchairs and many dogs dressed up in red jackets.”

Last year’s event raised £20,000 and the same is hoped for this year.

Caroline, who is head of fundraising for the Colchester Hospitals Charity, said this year’s proceeds will go to the Cancer Centre campaign.

That has so far raised £1.2million, just over a quarter of the £4.5 million needed for a new Cancer Centre at Colchester Hospital to serve mid and north Essex.

Already organisers are working on next year’s run, expected to take place on the second Sunday in December 2017. Those wanting to take part in next year’s run can call can 01206 745303.
