POST Office branches at Colchester and Clacton operated as usual on Saturday, despite threats of industrial action.

The pair were expected to be among the 11 across the county expected to suffer, but instead they were among the 99 per cent of branches open as normal.

Postal unions undertook strike action and mounted picket lines, in some of the branches nationally on what is one of the busiest days of the year. Such action had been called at Colchester and Clacton.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite are embroiled in a long-running row over the franchising of Crown Post Offices - larger branches usually located on high streets - in addition to job-losses and the closure of a final salary pension scheme.

However, Post Office bosses have appealed for the unions to talk with it and “discuss our strategy and find a constructive way forward.”

Kevin Gilliland, Post Office Network and Sales Director, said: “Their members work very hard to give our customers the best possible service in the run up to Christmas, and this action can only cause concern.”
