CONSERVATIVE councillor Peter Chillingworth has been nominated to become Colchester's next deputy mayor, before taking on the top post in 2018/19.
Mr Chillingworth, who represents the Rural North ward, was officially endorsed from across the floor at Colchester Council's cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Conservative group leader Dennis Willetts said: "Peter was first elected in May 2002 and has held several senior positions in the council.
"He is a former portfolio holder for waste, which can be a poison chalice, and a former chairman of the planning committee.
"He is certainly the most suitable candidate for deputy mayor for the forthcoming civic year."
After serving a year as deputy mayor, candidates then move onto the full mayorship for the next municipal year.
Highwoods Independent councillor Gerard Oxford, who is the current deputy mayor said: "I'm very pleased Peter has been nominated.
"We look forward to working with Peter and his wife during my mayorship next year, and likewise in 2018/19."
Colchester Council leader Paul Smith (Lib Dem): "I am concious as a portfolio holder he did not shirk his responsibilities and I congratulate the Conservative group on their excellent selection."
Labour cabinet member Mike Lilley added: "The Labour group is really happy to support Peter with this nomination."
The nomination will be officially endorsed at a full council meeting on Thursday.
