A MILITARY charity is turning the traditional advent calendar on its head by shunning chocolate treats, and collecting presents for veterans instead.

The reverse advent calendar has been set up in The Invicta Foundation Shop in Culver Street, Colchester, with residents, businesses and organisations asked to donate gifts which can be handed out to people who have served in the Armed Forces.

Donations can be made between 9.30am and 5pm up until December 23 with the charity's Invicta Bears on hand to oversee gifts which can include sweets, toys, books, CDs, hampers and gift sets.

Welfare manager Cheryl Hall said it was crucial to support veterans, especially at this time of year.

She said: "Christmas can be a lonely time for veterans.

"Donating a few little luxuries can make a huge difference.

"In the festive period it is important we that we teach our children the values of giving and helping those in need.

"One small action and gesture can go a long way.”
