PASSENGERS will be able to use Colchester’s park and ride for FREE tomorrow.

Essex County Council announced the news to coincide with Small Business, a nationwide celebration of small businesses and traders.

As part of the day, businesses across Essex are being encouraged to offer special deals and discounts and residents are being urged to take advantage.

Kevin Bentley, deputy leader of Essex County Council, who is also responsible for economic growth and partnerships, said: “We know December can be an expensive time of year so we wanted to make it as simple and cheap as possible for shoppers to get out and see what businesses have to offer.

“I would encourage shoppers and small businesses to get involved in this year’s Small Business Saturday to show Essex means business.”

Shoppers will be allowed unlimited free travel on the Saturday when they park up at Sandon, Chelmer Valley or Colchester Park and Ride sites.

Jason Berry, of the Lampshade Company, and Iain Wicks, of the Federation of Small Businesses, welcomed the initiative.

The pair have campaigned for a free Park and Ride in Colchester since the summer but had come up against a cost-conscious council.

Now the move has been given the green light, they will be touring the town’s independent retailers to promote their #SmallBizSatUK social media campaign.

Mr Berry said: “This is a wonderful win not just for us but for all small businesses up and down the county who could benefit hugely from Small Business Saturday.

“It’s estimated UK businesses saw a rise of approximately 24 per cent turnover as a result.

“The Lampshade Company is one of the Small Business Saturday 100 this year and I’ve been volunteered to act as the Colchester ambassador this year.

“I’m also working closely with Colchester Market, Culver Square and Red Lion Walk to provide retail areas for some small businesses who currently don’t have town centre retail space.”

Small Business Saturday is also being supported by MP Will Quince, Colchester Council, Colbea, Essex Chambers of Commerce, Colchester Retail Business Association and Colchester Presents.
