A TALENTED footballer died suddenly in the early hours of Saturday morning, his club has confirmed.

Lee Pennycuick, 31, played for Brightlingsea Regent's Sunday side.

The club has paid tribute to the former Alderman Blaxill student.

A minute's silence was held to mark popular Mr Pennycuick's death before the club's First XI home game to Thamesmead Town, which kicked off at 3pm yesterday.

In a statement released by the club, it states: "Everyone involved in the club is deeply saddened by the recent news.

"Lee loved his football making the number three shirt his own while playing for our Sunday men's team.

Gazette:

"He was extremely well liked and a popular member of Brightlingsea Regent even having the clubs crest tattooed on his leg.

"Lee will be deeply missed by so many but never forgotten by everyone.

"Our deepest thoughts go with his family and friends at this sad time.

Gazette:

"The team today will be wearing black arm bands and would like to invite everyone today to take part in a minute silence before kick-off as a mark of respect to Lee."

Other tributes, including from Colchester United player Sammie Szmodics, have been paid on social media.

Alongside a prayer symbol, the U's star tweeted: "RIP BRO."

Friends have also posted on his Facebook page, stating: "R.I.P mate, such sad news, you will be missed by many."

Another added: "I really can't process what I'm hearing right now!

"You were the life and soul of the party & you have touched so so many hearts.

"You are going to be very missed by many.

"Rest in peace babe heaven has most defiantly gained an angel."

One other friend posted: "I cannot believe what I have heard this morning - hit me like a tonne of bricks.

"I think the whole of Colchester is in mourning today.

"I am broken-hearted!"
