A DANCEATHON is being held in honour of an inspirational woman who died of cancer aged 22.

Demi Wright died just weeks after going into hospital.

Now her cousin, Zoe King is calling on fundraisers to Dance for Demi in the hope of raising £2,000 for Cancer Research.

Participants will sashay along to different dance styles as instructors lead on Zumba, Caribbean Dancehall and Massala Banghra, to name a few.

The only stipulation is those taking part have to wear something yellow.

Mrs King, 33, from Colchester, said: “Demi loved to dance, she did musical theatre at college and took part in competitions, and I used to teach Zumba so I wanted to combine those.

“I wanted to do a fun fundraising activity her friends and family could get involved in because our Race for Life in July was so successful and it brought people together.”

Former Alderman Blaxill School student Demi died in February of terminal adenocarcinoma, an aggressive form of cancer which had spread around her body.

She was admitted to a maternity ward after the undiagnosed tumour began emitting hormones similar to those in pregnancy.

But after doctors found a 12cm growth, Demi was transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and her health quickly deteriorated.

Mrs King said: “She was such a genuine soul we want her to continue doing good although it was a devastating time.

“Taking part in events gives people some hope they’re not going through it on their own.

“It won’t take away the pain of losing Demi, but she was such a beautiful and lovely person, we want her to live on.”

About 50 people have paid £10 to take part in the danceathon, but there is space for 250 people at Colchester Institute, where it will be staged.

Mrs King added: “It can be a personal challenge or for someone to just experience little snippets of each dance style.

Dance for Demi takes place on Sunday, November 27 from 11am until 2pm.

Tickets are non-refundable and can be collected from Go Bananas, at the Cowdray Centre.
