A 72-year-old Clacton gran enlisted the help of her husband in a white water rafting experience to raise funds for their sick grandson Zac.

The couple took to the icy cold rapids of the Lee Valley White Water Training Centre near London and raised £625.

“I have got over the aches and pains but it was great fun and we all had a laugh,” said Joan Morrison.

Joan and Laurence went to the centre with other family members, including six-year-old Zac who has cystic fibrosis, epilepsy and Angelman’s syndrome, which causes jerky movements and prevents him from talking.

Three friends from Joan’s keep fit classes also went, taking photos as the Morrisons took to their craft.

“We went around the course four times. We trained for around 45 minutes and then it must have been a further hour-and-a-half,” Joan continued.

Despite the fun, Joan said she doubts she will do it again.

“I will think of something else. The water was so cold. The training was worse because you had to jump in, go down a dip and swim to shore. It was such hard work and the water was so cold,” she said.

Joan, of Marigold Avenue, wishes to thank her 62-year-old husband for joining in as well as those who gave money.

The Morrison family is trying to raise £15,000 to pay for a wet room and other space for Colchester-based Zac, who cannot walk and has a daily routine of chest physio and tube feeds.
