COMMUNITY members joined Colchester’s newly elected mayor, Theresa Higgins, to mark the official start of her year in the role.

Mrs Higgins chose St James the Less and St Helen Roman Catholic Church, in Priory Street, for the annual civic service because of her faith.

The Town Sergeant led the mayor and mayor’s escort, councillor Professor Peter Higgins, and her invited guests in a robed procession, from the church hall for the start of Sunday’s service.

Representatives attended from the six charities Mrs Higgins has chosen to support this year, including Colchester and Tendring Deaf Children’s Society.

The service was also delivered in sign language.

It was also attended by members from several denominations and faiths.

Mrs Higgins said: “This was the first time there has been Catholic mass rather than just a civic service.

“I always wanted a fullblown Catholic mass and that’s what we had."

Mrs Higgins’ other chosen charities this year are Colchester Phoenix Swimming Club, YMCA, Colchester Sea Cadets, Nurture Dogs and Stepping Stones nursery.

There will be a chance to meet Mr Higgins on Saturday at Colchester Town Hall at 10am, at the Mayor’s Escort At Home event.
