A NEW running event has been launched to get people fit and raise money for Age UK Essex.

The charity has joined forces with Essex University to launch the Retro Run.

The 5km and 10km runs will take place at Wivenhoe Park on Sunday, June 14.

There will be music from a different decade to accomplany every kilometre.

Jean Robinson, organiser, said: “This event is the first of its kind in the country.

“We want people to get fitter and be more active outdoors, but also help to fundraise to support older people.

“The run will see different music from a different decade for every kilometre.

“They’ll be something for everyone and will be a bit of a trip down memory lane. The idea works really well with the link to Age UK.”

Mrs Robinson helped to launch the event at Red Lion Walk on Saturday.

She said: “We spoke to a lot of people and have attracted so much interest in the idea. It’s going to be absolutely fabulous – we’re all really excited about it.

“Fancy dress is optional, but will really add to the atmosphere.”

It is hoped the event, which is open to all ages, will raise £6,500 for Age UK’s befriending scheme.

Mrs Robinson said: “This money will be used to help lonely and socially isolated older people across the county.

“There are 33,000 older people across Essex who can goamonth at a time without seeing anyone – and that’s horrendous.”

Entry to the race cost £15 and it is hoped everyone taking part will raise an additional £25.

Everyone taking part will get Retro Run T-shirt, fitness programme and pedometer to track fitness activity up to and after the event on June 14.
