THE future of recycling and waste collection in Colchester has been placed in the hands of a special council task and finish group.

The group will consider how to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by Colchester residents and how to increase the borough’s recycling rate, perhaps by introducing wheelie bins or changing the frequency of rubbish collections.

Members of the group, which will be chaired by Labour councillor Julie Young, will report back in June, 2015.

Nick Barlow, Colchester councillor responsible for waste, said: “I am pleased the cabinet has agreed to the task and finish group considering the future of the borough’s recycling collection service.

“The service is a fundamental part of us all reducing our impact on the environment and I look forward to receiving the group’s recommendations.

“Many Colchester residents have views on recycling and waste collections, and how we increase recycling rates, so we will gather these as part of the work.”
