AIRLINE easyJet will let customers use their mob- iles to check in at Stansted and Southend airports.

The UK’s largest airline is trialling mobile boarding passes at six airports including the Essex terminals, Manchester, Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Nice.

easyJet says passengers will be able to check in within ten seconds and download and store their boarding passes on iPhone and Android phones.

They will be able to use the system through easyJet’s successful mobile phone app.

Once boarding passes have been downloaded they are stored offline, so no network coverage or wi-fi is required and no roaming charges will be incurred.

Peter Duffy, easyJet marketing director, said: “We know from passenger feedback this will be a popular addition to our award-winning app. Mobile boarding passes is the next important step in our aim to make travel easy and affordable. “Following a successful trial, we will be working with each of the airports in order to roll out the function across the network. “The trial will also be extended to include multiple boarding passes on the same device, so families can check in using one or a number of mobiles, depending on their preference.”

Since its launch in late 2011, more than 4.5 million people have downloaded the easyJet app. The app is free and suitable for both iPhones and Android smart phones. Recent additions to the app include allowing passengers to pre-book their own seat, add a bag to their booking and view hotels at their destination. The trial will be extended to include mobile web to cater for windows phone 7/8 and Blackberry devices later this year.
