Experts discover new Roman graves

GRAVES dating back to Roman times have been excavated by archaeologists in Colchester.

The experts from the Colchester Archaeological Trust have been digging on the site of the new car park in Napier Road, part of the former Colchester Garrison.

Errr. The whole area is a Roman period graveyard. Hardly any surprise to find eight more of the hundreds they have already found in that are and a fraction of the total number that there must have been. 100,000 at least, when you consider a population average of 5000 people over 350 years of the colonia. Tell us something new Gazette - like the finding of a Roman amphitheatre. But well done the archaeologists. Who would want to be out there in this weather, digging up our ancestors?

Jess, whilst it's not earth shattering news people will be interested in this. This piece of land is the old car park for the Garrison cricket ground where I've played for years so yes it interests me.

The circus clips the ground as well and it would be interesting to know what else is there.

Yes when you think how long the area called colchester has been a domain it is not surprising that there may have
been a few deaths and subsequent burials.in years to come I wonder if generations will think we just disappeared, as most of us now go by way of the chimney then scattered to the four winds.
