I am heartily sick and tired of the criticism in the Gazette levelled at Essex schools closing during spells of bad weather.

The Greater Anglia rail franchise has now commenced and, thankfully, National Express is no longer involved. However, I have my reservations, given all the rebranding which our trains have undergone, from Great Eastern and Anglia Railways to One and then National Express East Anglia and now to Great Anglia, which I am sure comes with some extra gofaster stripes for our trains!

Funding the minority

I read Stephen Mayzes, councillor responsible for tourism and community life at Tendring Council, has a view that “only a small minority benefit from the (council football) pitches, so why should all taxpayers fund that?”

Challenge your MP over rent increases

Letters, signed by me as portfolio holder for housing at Colchester Council, started dropping on the doormats of council tenants last week following the cabinet’s decision on January 25 to set an average rent increase of just over 8 per cent.

A community meeting hall

While it was fantastic to read about Essex University students working with Voices for Greenstead to redecorate the Forest Road Meeting Hall (Gazette, February 2), it should be noted Colne Housing Society leases the hall.
