Williams and Griffin is an excellent store, which I frequent.

Judging from the published pictures, the re-fronted store will be a disappointing addition to the conservation area.

Has everybody forgotten how to build high street frontages?

The project reminds me of the much-criticised, postwar development of Exeter and Plymouth.

Glass walls in “picture frames” don’t make a street frontage, and we are now only too familiar with these. The re-facing of Lion Walk shows how boring it can be.

The now infamous St Botolph’s shows the sheer destructiveness of minimalist, old-fashioned design.

Our High Street retains some good examples of store frontage architecture with plenty to interest the eye.

Back to the drawing board, please.
