I hope the recent period of rain has made councils far and wide realise they cannot allow new buildings where there is no proper infrastructure to cope with drainage and sewage.
They can do all the checks they like, but when nature calls she has found them wanting.
We’ve had floods in most villages and, yes, even Colchester Hythe, not to mention main roads within the area.
There were sewage leaks again in Point Clear and other places that have gone on for years due to overloading of systems, and yet councils still consider building more homes.
The fact is for decades the systems needed to cope with present housing needs have been neglected, and before councils get any more bright ideas, they should stand back and take a good look at themselves and those who are responsible for the upkeep of our drainage and sewerage systems.
The easy option of building in populated areas has shown its weakness, as has the new government building programme.
