The Gazette (February 2) contained three items somewhat linked. Firstly, the story about the hike in sports pitch fees by Tendring Council that backfired and the letter about the hike in fees for the Lion Walk Activity Centre by Colchester Council.
It is obvious councillors and their civil servants don’t understand the law of diminishing returns. Increase the price, sell less – almost a rule, certainly a candidate for the Murphy’s Law book!
Then there was Will Quince proposing Colchester councillors should not be made to face their electorate at less than a four-year term. Self-preservation?
Under the current system, one third are tested each year. This at least lets us get rid of some deadwood!
And it is obvious we have a lot of deadwood to shift.
The only advantage to a full four-year term is that we can be rid of the whole lot in one go.
