A very dear friend has recently been told by an oncologist at Essex County Hospital that she should have a mammogram.
The clinic nurse handed her a typewritten note, which indicated that, due to the retirement of their breast radiologist and equipment shortages, the hospital is only able to carry out “a few procedures a week”.
The hospital is unable to predict how long a patient would have to wait and advised patients that if no appointment had been received after a 12-week wait, they should telephone them.
Considering the size of the area covered and the number of potential sufferers there could be, I consider this situation a disgrace.
