A pensioner was rushed to hospital today after her car smashed through the front of an Indian restaurant.

The 79-year-old woman was driving her black Ford Fiesta in Kingsway, Dovercourt, when the incident happened.

Sub officer Jason Whitnell, of Harwich fire station, said damage was caused to the front bay window of the Joi Tandoori restaurant and to the brickwork surrounding the frame of the window.

He said two members of the public had already managed to get the pensioner out of her car before they arrived.

The road was closed to traffic while firefighters and emergency crews worked at the scene.

pensioners are as much as a menace as young drivers, I think there should be a cut of age of about 70.

Probably thought it was a drive-thru...! (And don't complain about jokes, no one was hurt).

Takign Ian's point on board, most driver of 70+ never needed to take a test or if they did road conditions etc were much different 50 odd years ago. Everyone who reaches a certain age, say 65/70 should be retested regularly to ensure their safety and that of other road users (and restaurant diners!)

When you look at any statistics, people aged 17-25 are more likely to be involved in car accidents over any other age group bar one. Only the 85+ age group has more accidents. If you are going to stop over 70s then you could more than argue that anyone under 25 shouldn't be driving either. These are government statistics and insurance company figures and are widely available.
