A girl guide who helped raise £25,000 for a Ugandan school has set her sights on a new philanthropic challenge.
Rachel Butterfield from Tiptree decided to fundraise for the Christ’s Embassy Primary School in Kasaka as part of her Queen’s Guide Award.
The school is run through the Love in Action charity, which was set up by former Colcestrians Alan and Beryl Went in 2004.
Rachel, 22, raised £6,000 through charity events, while she also set up the Love in Action Challenge guiding badge which included sections on African culture and Fairtrade.
Fundraising was also a large part of the badge, and girls from around East Anglia and as far away as Devon and Wales helped gather a huge £19,000.
The money has since been spent on two double classrooms for the school, where Rachel taught for five weeks last year.
Now, the business lecturer is using her experiences in Uganda to start a charity of her own called Watering Roots.
