SUPERHEROES wowed crowds as they scaled the Colchester Town Hall for charity.

A total of 42 people abseiled 66ft down the High Street building to raise money for Colchester Hospitals Charity’s Cancer Centre Campaign, which is supported by the Gazette.

The oldest participant was 84-year-old Barbara Sanderson, who dressed up as Catwoman.

Other abseilers included Dr Marion Wood, a former medical director of Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, Christopher Backhouse, a consultant vascular surgeon, Jane Murphy, Matron for Critical Care, and her son Charlie, Dr Phil Murray, retired consultant oncologist, and Donna Booton, former Matron at the hospital’s cancer unit.

Caroline Bates, Colchester Hospitals Charity’s head of charity and fundraising, said: “We were very pleased with how it went, it was the first time we have done that event.

“We were delighted so many people came and we think we have raised well over £10,000.

“Some people were really quite worried about doing it but they all said how wonderful the instructors were. It caused quite an audience.”

The new cancer centre would see the chemotherapy and haematology services brought next door to the radiotherapy unit.
