Agent behind St John's takeaway plans

THE agent behind plans to convert a card shop into a fast-food takeaway has spoken in support of the proposals.

Colchester councillors gave the go ahead last week for Celebrations, in St Christopher Road, to reopen as a fast-food takeaway in spite of strong opposition from nearby residents.

Residents had hoped the premises could be used as a green grocers or a shoe repair shop.

But a spokesman for agent Direct Planning said: “If residents feel so strongly about opposing a fast-food outlet, they should look again and see what else would be suitable for that area.

“This is the only suitable business for the premises.”

He added: “Tesco, for example, is basically taking away any hope of another small green grocer or something like a butcher.

“That is what is happening all over the country, not just in Colchester.”

Plans to convert the premises will start “immediately”.

The spokesman would not divulge what food will be served by the new outlet. but in the past, Direct Planning has acted for Papa John’s Pizza, Dominos Pizza, KFC and Pizza GoGo.

Residents’ main concerns surround noise and smell from the new outlet, which must have extractor fans fitted before it can open.

Residents wanted a greengrocers or a shoe repair shop? How long do they think either of these businesses would have lasted? This is St.Johns we're talking about - not Belgravia. Also stating that the business MUST have extractor fans fitted before it opens is a bit pointless - all commercial kitchens have extractor fans. If they didn't, the temperature would be unbearable and the kitchen would probably explode. This is St.Johns we're talking about - not Belgravia.

There used to be a butchers and green grocers there a few years ago. Due to lack of trade they closed down. Several shops have come and gone over the years, there has been a bakers, a fishmongers, a ladies clothes shop, a flooring shop, a vacuum cleaner repair shop, a hardware shop, a video rental shop and even a launderette.

When I moved to the area with my family in July 1965 the only shop there was a newsagents in a little wooden hut where the post box is now.

Sounds cobblers to me!

Perhaps a Habidashery shop or Candle Maker would fit without having any direct competition from Tesco.
