REMAINS dating back hundreds of years could provide a new insight into Colchester life - Roman style.

Experts from the Colchester Archaeological Trust are investigating what lies beneath the surface of the car park in Butt Road, Colchester.

And they hope their findings will unlock secrets of life from 2,000 years ago.
In Roman times, bodies were buried outside the town wall.

Trust director Philip Crummy said thousands of people would have been buried in the land stretching away from Colchester’s fortification.

The Trust has carried out numerous excavations as part of the redevelopment of Colchester Garrison and have made a range of discoveries including finding Britain’s only chariot circus.

The Trust is exploring underneath the car park before developers Taylor Wimpey build houses on the site.

.....and the council is closing the castle for 18 months so that nobody can find out more about our heritage. What will replace it during this time? Not that old miseryguts above could care less. Don't suppose he has a proper job either, other than whining for England.

That's sounds negative closing the Castle. It is being refurbished and should be a lot better.

Shame there will be no where to displays items in the meantime.

Would it not be an idea to use the VAF to display some of the contents of the Castle for the public to view whilst the refurb takes place? Also, I am sure this will help it to live up to its potential - if even just for 18 months?

Great idea swanie - completely agree with that.

The castle will be closing for 14 months and the objects are going back into storage. There are no plans, so I'm to understand, to have objects on display elsewhere. Nor are there plans to open Hollytrees and Natural History on a Monday (they are currently only open Tues-Sun). With Firstsite closed on a Monday, there will nothing to bring tourists to Colchester for on that day apart from the shopping. The only exception is that for one month the keep will be open to the public as an empty space so it can be viewed as a medieval building not a museum (albeit with a 1930s roof and mezzanine floor).
