David Iles is now a governor at Ramsey College
Retired headteachers hope to help turn a secondary school around after it was placed in special measures.
David Iles and Elizabeth Ward have joined the governing body of Ramsey College, Halstead.
Mr Iles was head of Richard de Clare Primary School, Halstead, for 27 years until this summer, and Mrs Ward - who is now chairman of governors - is former head of Colchester County High School for Girls.
Ofsted inspectors found Ramsey to be inadequate across the board in July.
