Colchester MP raises child poverty

COLCHESTER MP Sir Bob Russell MP has criticised his government for failing to offer free school meals to more than two million children in poverty.

The Lib Dem quizzed schools secretary David Laws about the “outrage” after figures showed 3.6 million children lived in households with an income less than 60 per cent of the median, but only 1.3 million were eligible for school meals.

Mr Laws, also a Lib Dem, replied the “current economic climate” meant offering free meals to everyone was not possible.
