RESIDENTS were plunged into darkness after street lights were cut down without warning.

Four lampposts in St Dominic Road and in St John’s Road were taken down by Essex County Council engineers without explanation.

Paul Smith, borough councillor for St John’s, said representatives should have been informed before action was taken.

Essex County Council says the lampposts were unsafe and will be replaced eventually.

I doubt they were actually "plunged into darkness".

Perhaps there were so dangerous they were taken down in the middle of the night?

OK, so they were a possible danger to the public, but I'm sure the risk was worth taking until new lights were installed? Another over reaction IMO.
