Heritage group calls for action on Brook House

A NATIONAL Heritage boss has called for agreement to be reached on a historic building which has lay derelict for 25 years.

Brook House, a Grade-II listed building, in Maldon Road, Tiptree, has become a target for antisocial behaviour and parish councillors had hoped money would be made available by Colchester Council to pay for repairs.

But they have been told no funding is available.

Rhiannon Wicks, of Save Britain’s Heritage, said: “It is part of the area’s history and is absolutely essential that it is preserved.

“We take a keen interest in Brook House and have put it on the Buildings at Risk register.

“The longer it is left, the more possible loss of the historic fabric of Colchester and I would urge all parties to agree on a way forward.”

Various articles have appeared over the years about this building I understand the problem is a tree which has a preservation order on it, yet is endangering the building's foundations if it can't be cut down.

Seems unbelievable that a tree is considered more important than a building. But this house has been deteriorating for many years and last time it was in the news, it emerged that the current owners have, shall we say, helped to accelerate the deterioration.
CBC is entitled to order the owner to repair a listed building at his own expense, but it seems it does not take this responsibility seriously.

Just had a look at Google Street View what a nice house ruined by a tree. I'm not convinced about a tree preservation order on it though. It isn't marked as having a TPO on the council's website and is a pine (?). The only reason that the tree might be protected is that it's on a listed building site. Just an excuse for not looking after the house. the owner did apply to knock it down in 2009.
