Gates protecting thousands of Wivenhoe and Colchester residents from the tide refurbished

MORE than 2,000 Colchester and Wivenhoe residents have been protected from flooding after repairs to the Colne Barrier were completed.

Thirteen gates at the barrier, at Wivenhoe, were refurbished while the hydraulic system operating them has been overhauled.

The gates allow water to flow down the River Colne and prevent large tides reaching the two towns.

The main, or mitre, gates at the barrier will now be refurbished.

The project was expected to cost £525,000 but was completed for £350,000.
