Nurse Annie retires after more than 40 years Nurse Annie retires after more than 40 years

BACK in 1971, Education Secretary Margaret Thatcher ended free school milk for children over seven, Chay Blyth became the first person to sail around the world east to west and Annie Cockerton began a nursing career which was to span more than 40 years.

Annie, fo Mersea Road, Colchester, started her career on her 18th birthday as a student nurse at Essex County Hospital in Colchester.

Yesterday,  she retired, nearly 42 years later - although she plans to carry on working as a volunteer.
