Residents' opposition mounting against takeaway plans
OPPOSITION is mounting against plans to convert a card shop into a fast-food takeaway.
Proposals have been submitted to Colchester Council to convert Celebrations, in St Christopher Road.
About 50 residents who live near the shops were asked for their views on the plans by the St John’s Residents’ Association, with more than 20 vowing to oppose the application.
If given the go-ahead, it would be the second takeaway in the shop row.
Bob Dunston, chairman of the residents’ association, said: “There were a lot of people who didn’t even know plans had been put to the council.
“It came as a surprise to them.”
Mr Dunston added residents have said they would prefer to see a shoe repair shop or a green grocers in Celebrations’ place.
“A fast-food takeaway would create a lot of litter and that would be added to the litter which we already have to deal with from the other takeaway,” he added.
“The view is two takeaways is probably too much.”
The application is due to be decided by October 19.
