A VILLAGE building project was opened yesterday by a footballing legend.

England’s most-capped player Peter Shilton cut the ribbon at the Alresford Community Leisure Project.

Mr Shilton said: “It is a great pleasure for me to come along and it is such a fantastic event. There has been a tremendous amount of work by people to achieve this and that’s what communities are about.”

The scheme, jointly overseen by the parish council, Alresford Colne Rangers FC and the village hall committee, saw the village hall refurbished and extended, with new changing and shower facilities added.

Russell Milburn, chairman of the village hall committee, said: “This means 14 years of working towards something and never giving up, because once you get all the right people in place things will happen and hopefully now the village will take advantage of that.

“We can only put in place facilities, it’s up to the community to use them.”
