Colchester MP riled by ‘sad’ prankster on Twitter
2:10pm Thursday 6th September 2012 in News By Caroline Tilley
Sir Bob Russell
COLCHESTER MP Sir Bob Russell is not amused about a spoof Twitter account pretending to be him.
Fans of the social networking site might have been forgiven for thinking the long-serving Lib Dem had finally embraced the “tweet revolution”.
However, on closer scrutiny it was clear the messages about going out for curries with fellow Essex MPs and spotting Conservatives begging for change at a railway station were the work of a prankster.
One Tweet yesterday from his fake account said: “What’s the worse thing you’ve ever done Bobby lad I hear you cry? Well once I rode my push bike on the pavement nowhere near a cycle lane!”
The spoof Bob Russell account, set up on Tuesday, was labelled “sad” by Sir Bob. He said: “I can’t even text, let alone tweet. I had no idea it existed until the Gazette told me.
“I believe I know who this person is and I believe he is of the Conservative party.
“I just have to accept there are people out there who have nothing better to do. I have every confidence the vast majority of my constituents, and even those who did not vote for me, will be appalled at this sort of behaviour. It’s just sad.”
Fake Twitter accounts have become the rage for celebrities and football players, with many having to point out their real account or get friends to continually state they do not have one.
However, some MPs do have their own Twitter account.
Bernard Jenkin , MP for Harwich and North Essex, and Douglas Carswell , Clacton MP, are regular tweeters.
But Sir Bob said he would not be joining the social networking site anytime soon.
He said: “I don’t engage in Twitter. It’s not necessary to have an account, although other people disagree.
“People can contact me from a whole range of means.”

Could it be that somebody deep within Bob's media savvy team, saw this as an ideal opportunity to get some free column inches and airtime on local television?
From what I saw, there was nothing 'vile' about the tweets, and have pondered the possibility that Bob has not actually read them himself.
I echo what has already been said in this comments section; and urge Bob to take a leaf out of the rest of the satirised figures in the public spotlight
This just shows that Bob is very much out of touch with the rest of us.
Come on Bob, show us you have a sense of humour, and Remember what the account told us numerous times: BOLO!

Might also be a good idea to point out that there was just 50 followers to this account, with majority percentage being made up of News quest twitter accounts.

He should realize that people who disagree with the national politics he supports can still respect a person by how they conduct themselves. I do not respect how he behaves.

As others have pointed to, if it clearly isn't Bob Russell, and it is an obvious spoof, he has nothing to moan about. That's satire. Whether it was good or bad satire, I do not know, because Russell's chosen the disgraceful path of censorship. Twitter should have stood up to this democracy hating bully.

With regard to Sir Bob I haven't seen him say anything about the new David Laws appointment in marked contrast to the way he went after Hanningfield.
Furthermore he's hardly manning the barricades against the new benefit cuts that are due out next April 2013.
But I guess he feels he's done his bit and now he has his knighthood well ...
Dennis Skinner MP is my more my kind of local MP.

So Jenkin and Carswell tweet, better than visiting their constituencies I suppose.
Despite his many faults, Russell is a far better MP than Fatty would ever be.

I don´t think he´s been a bad local MP overall, and for a brief moment it seemed he might become a principled thorn in the side of the Coalition. Was he hushed up by being knighted? A shame, because he could have spent the last 4 or 5 years of his time as MP raising the awkward questions that nobody wanted to hear.
This stuff about Twitter is a bit silly, really, but it´s fluff and nonsense. Part of being in the public eye is spoofs, satire etc. Becoming high and mighty about it just makes him look stupid.

But of course, that's just it, disagreements are over tittle tattle these days, rather than anything of substance..

A MP who represents the people first and not himself. Problem we have is where do we find one? Good MPs are like 'hens teeth' and there will always be voters who are just 'sheeples' and not peoples! Sir Bob is well past his sell by date now he's just holding on for his MPs pension. Bet he'll miss the subsidised meals the MPs get and the expenses!

both labour & conservative mp`s both have the same agenda,
its only the speed on implimentation of the duel agendas that differs.

'Politics is a career'
Those two statements very gradually rot the soul of most politicians, until they all eventually look and sound alike.
