Essex senior police denied Olympic overtime payments

SENIOR police officers in Essex will not receive Olympic overtime.

Police officers at inspector rank or above usually have to sacrifice overtime payments when they reach the higher ranks in the force.

However police regulations do allow discretionary bonuses.

Other forces, such as West Yorkshire Police, agreed to pay senior staff a daily £75 bonus after they worked such long hours providing mutual aid for security operations during the games.

But Essex Police will not be paying bonuses to senior staff despite the county hosting the mountain biking at Hadleigh Farm and the extra work which was required.

Senior management in the bulk of the private sector accept it's a given that overtime or extra working is just part of the job, so I'm sure most senior officers would accept this decision by Essex Police. It's just a shame that all forces don't follow similar policies.

I understand that their contracts state

"Hours as required"
Why should we pay these overpaid any extra for doing their duty?
