The van should have been fluorescent yellow, too -- and the driver should have been wearing a neck brace in case he had whiplash (Bike helmets have not been shown to reduce injuries in collisions over 12mph; in fact they can worsen injuries. See http://www.cyclehelm
ets.org/1039.html, but compulsory neck braces may reduce cases of whiplash)
Wonder what speed van was doing? Taxis and other "quiet time" vehicles roar up and down my road because they think no-one else is about.
Sounds like a typical case of SMIDSY -- Sorry Mate I Didn't See You. http://www.stop-smid

The wearing of a cycle helmet is a personal choice, as is high vis clothing, and cyclists, i'm sure would be much safer but all too often many cyclists don't have lights! Suppose many think they don't need lights!

As a car driver who does 1000's of miles a year and avid cyclist both on road and off. i have seen my fair share of incidents. but am withholding comment pending further information , cyclist/motorcylist and vehicle driver all have to share the road EQUALLY regardless of size . it does annoy me when a story is printed with little or no facts. come on gazzette give us the information to make informed comment or dont bother posting these stories

It seems red lights certainly do not apply to a bike, and as for lights, they seem an optional extra for many! I do shift work, and the amount of times I have seen bikes whne it's ptich black merrily cycling along! Almost as bad as cars that drive in half light / fog with side lights! maybe THEY can see, but others CAN'T see them !

Unfortunately we see so many cyclists without lights and without following the rules of the road. When cycling extra care is needed, can't be too careful these days! Hope he is not seriously injured.
