In Tuesday's Gazette: So you call this justice?

The victim of a brutal assault in Colchester High Street fears she will never get justice after latest attempts to charge a suspect failed.

Nikki Brewer, who was knocked to the ground in a late-night attack which was shown on Crimewatch, is devastated by the decision.

A man, 31, arrested on suspicion of assault, has now been released without charge because the incident was classed as common assault, which only has a six-month time limit for prosecution.

Also in Tuesday's Gazette:

  • A vision of how a sport and leisure park could take shape in the north of Colchester has been unveiled. Fields surrounding Colchester United's community stadium at Cuckoo Farm will be transformed into leisure facilities, a hotel and space for offices and industrial units.
  • A great-grandmother will conquer her fear of heights by abseiling town Colchester Town Hall in memory of her brother, who was killed four years ago.
  • Developers are still hoping to turn a former Colchester pub into a convenience store.
  • For all the pictures and reaction from the weekend's carnivals in Clacton and Mersea, see our four-page special in today's Gazette.

All this and much more in your Gazette - only 43p. Remember, there's always much more in the newspaper than online.

So why did the police take so long to get the case to the CPS, another one swept under the carpet to make the figures look good I suppose? Surely it does not matter what sort of assault it was it was an assault and should be dealt with accordingly!

Having left Colchester and lived abroad for over ten years I cannot believe what the town centre of Colchester has become. On my visits back I am advised to avoid the high street at night at all costs. The friends I meet up with, who I frequented such places like the Windmill and Tartan house and all the town centre pubs are now wary of walking down their own local high street after dark. When are the limp wristed ineffective police going to get a grip on Colchester and when is the goverment going to get a grip on the out of control morons getting away with this type of behaviour. I dispair when I read the paper and hear the first hand tales of how debauched the town has become. Perhaps Colchester has lost its country town feel and is now just another overspill for London and attracting the dregs that come with it.
I remember reading this when it first came to light and now the perpetrator is getting away with it makes it even harder to understand.
England is going to hell in a handcart and no one in authority seems to care...

Bonsoir

I have always walked through the town centre after dark, and so far, so good.
.
The real shame here is that the police need to identify very early what the deadlines are for various types of prosecution, and when there is a serious crime such as the one suffered by Nikki Brewer, they need to make sure they meet these dates.
A member of my family was killed on the A12 due to the failure of another vehicle owner to maintain his vehicle properly. While his widow was able to claim against the other party's insurer, the criminal negligence case collapsed because the police failed to file the relevant documents in time.
So I feel very sorry for Nikki that once again a criminal has escaped justice.

While I agree that the guy needs to be arrested and put in jail. She does hold some responsibility for what happened to her. Too many people end up injured and sometimes killed just because they insist on arguing with the attacker. Just look at the video of the attack. It seems as if the guy says something to the girls when they pass by him. They could have gone on their way, but oh no, there she comes back getting up all in his face trying to be bad **** girl. The other girl has more sense than her and tries to pull her back, but that doesn't stop Nikki. Nikki thinks she's all tough and that him getting close to her is not a threat. Welcome to the real world Nikki.

And with that post Jimmy shows why common decency and standards have gone west. It's 10-15 years since I did any serious Saturday night drinking in Colchester but even that short time ago this would have been unthinkable. If I hit a woman my friends would have hit me and dragged me to the police and I'd bloody deserve it.
