Cost to follow football clubs revealed

Colchester United has thanked its most committed fans who spend an average of £55,000 supporting the club during their lifetime.

Research by Continental Tyres revealed football fans spend the equivalent of two years salary supporting a league team in England.

When you add up the season ticket, other match tickets, travel, food, drink and programmes the average fan will spend almost £1,300 a year.

Colchester United applauded their most loyal fans and promised to continue offering additional benefits to those who dedicate so much time and money to the club.

A spokesman said: “The chairman himself [Robbie Cowling] has always said that while we don’t have the largest number of fans the ones we do have are very committed.

“This figures just goes to show how committed.

“They do come in and buy the programmes and the costs all mount up so it is important we look after those who are committed.”

That is just for the home games. If you add the cost of travelling to away games, you can add hundreds to that figure.

'Blimey' £ 1,300 a year to support my local league 1 team, that's a lot of dough for someone living on a state pension.
That said, I'd feel a lot more cheated if I were supporting some of those overpaid pre madonna's who under-achieved for England in the Euro's.
