Reaction from protestors outside Colchester Magistrates' Court.

A COLCHESTER man who shot and stabbed his dog has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison.

Andrew Summerfield, of Defoe Crescent, was told an immediate custodial sentence was the only option for magistrates sitting at Colchester on Wednesday morning.

He was also disqualified from owning or caring for any animals for the rest of his life and told his air rifle and meat cleaver, which he attacked the dog with, would be destroyed.

Barney, the bull terrier, was discovered at the side of the A12 in July 2011 with massive head injuries.

He was put down at the scene by a vet.

More than 60 animal rights' protestors turned out to Colchester Magistrates' Court to hear the sentence.
