YOUNGSTERS from three Colchester schools tried out Olympic events during a special sports day at Essex University.

Pupils played sports including handball, tennis and hockey Broomgrove Junior School, Old Heath Community Primary School and Montgomery Junior School each brought 60 children from years five and six along to the event.

Community volunteering manager Keith Rowlands said: “We wanted to do something to mark the Olympics coming to London this year and also show the school children our campus and the excellent sports facilities we have here.

“The Students’ Union is also committed to reaching out to the community and working with young people to raise aspirations and introduce them to university life.”

The event was organised by aspiring Olympic racewalker Dom King, student activities and development manager at the Students’ Union and his brother Dan who is School Sport Partnership with Health and Competition Coordinator.
