PUPILS were given an introduction to opera during a special musical workshop.
Composer Jason Carr and opera singer Daniela Bechly ran sessions in breathing, musical theatre and opera with 20 music students from Thomas Lord Audley, Tendring Technology College and Chantry High School, Ipswich.
After warming up the students worked on West Side Story in the morning before watching parts of Carmen by Bizet and creating their own modern versions of the operatic classic.
The day was organised by the Pimlott Foundation which aims to support young performers by giving them opportunities to sing alongside professionals, and was held at the Old House Barn in Great Horkesley.
Music teacher Helen Thorne, who works with the foundation, said: “We introduced the students to opera but took them through musical theatre to show them how the boundaries are blurred between the two genres and that many of the techniques are the same.
“The day exposed students to music they would not normally necessarily come across, and they were totally enthusiastic.
“It was a very successful day.”
