Myland School rated satisfactory

A NORTH Colchester primary school has been rated as satisfactory by Ofsted.

Teachers at Myland Community Primary School, Mill Road, were praised for making learning fun and motivating pupils.

During their visit last month inspectors found children were well-behaved and eager to learn, and lessons were lively.

To improve further more formal management and monitoring systems need to be put in place.

That's good news.
.
However, I note the local journals have ignored the stunning victory of the CCHS in the National Spelling Contest. This is the second year in succession that a Colchester school has triumphed.
.
BBC Breakfast managed to notice the event and hosted the team on their show, so where were the Colchester journalists slumbering at the time?

Pretty poor result for Myland which says more about getting ticks in the box to hit assessment targets than children's achievements.

Quite the reverse, jut1972 - it seems to me from Ofsted's comments that the school's focus is completely on the children, rather than ticking all the boxes!

I agree with Jut. "Satisfactory" says to me that the School just scraped through. No mention of Excellent anywhere. Time for the staff to pull their finger out.

JCC think you misunderstand me, (my comment wasnt very clear).

Mr Young isnt the sort of headteacher to do something just to hit a target and I think the grade reflects that. However, I think his imminent retirement didnt help either. The grade gives the new headteacher a mandate to shake things up when she arrives.

My sons school (Saint James CofE) also received a satisfactory grading from Ofsted. Had I seen that prior to him joining the school, I may have re considered, however, I am glad I didn't as it is a fantastic school and he is absolutely thriving there, there is a lot more to a school that it's Ofsted grade .

Can't help but post the following, having been inspected by a lead inspector who has never taught and a retired secondary head who was clearly out of her depth with our 4 year olds!
Quotes from the report:
'Pupils behave well and are eager to learn'.
Teachers succeed in motivating because they make learning fun'.
'Pupils of all abilities work with concentration'.
'a notable success of the school is the good curriculum with exciting learning opporunities'.
'lessons move at a brisk pace with varied activity that keeps pupils engaged'.
'lively question and answer sessions that keep pupils engaged'.
'Leaders have been effective in maintaining a consistently positive climate for learning'.
'every child feels valued'.
'Relationships throughout the school are good'.
'Pupils enjoy lessons, they write with empathy'.
'Head/leaders take justifiable pride in the school's success in promoting pupil's confidence and personal development'.
'Equal opportunities are promoted effectively there is no discrimination'.
'The curriculum is good contributing very strongly to pupil's enthusiasm for learning and their strong spiritual, social, moral and cultural development'.
'Attendance has improved still further from an already good level'
Add to the above double the normal parental questionnaire response rate which was 'overwhelmingly positive' AND our about to be published KS2 results which will be exceptionally high as normal and this sounds like a school where I would love my child to attend.
If this is a satisfactory school, Lord help many others. This is politics of the worst form and a very poor inspection team, the only reason we haven't formally complained is because it will make life easier for the new head in September.
