Town centre hotel could become student accommodation

A FORMER hotel could be turned into student accommodation.

The Scheregate Hotel, in Osborne Street, Colchester, closed in September 2011 and has been empty ever since.

In February 2012 it was bought by the Partridge Property Partnership, which runs ten student blocks in Colchester.

Now the partnership has applied to Colchester Council to change the use of the building from a hotel to a residential student hostel.

The plans for the grade two listed building include renovating 32 bedrooms, an increase of four from the Scheregate, and two communal areas, as well as creating an internal courtyard.

Most students want to live much closer to campus. So I'm wondering if there's some straw clutching here.

...Don't the Institute and Sixth Form College students get a look in then?

Fair point.

However, being that the majority of Institute and VI form students are local, and Cameron now expects under 25s to live at home anyway, I suspect my point has some margin of reason.

If the Scheregate Hotel is not viable as a hotel, then this confirms that there is no case for any new hotel in the town centre. So forget about the putative hotel in Queen Street, and use the land released by demolishing the ex-Keddies building to enlarge the bus station.

I’m furious, the Scheregate was not a 'FAILED' hotel, but a 'FORMER' hotel, The Gazette needs to get its facts right before writing these articles. It's a slur to a local family run business hit by a tragic early loss of life!

My pals who come over from Sweden to watch the U's always stayed there. They always found it comfortable and great value. Since it's closure they have had the great displeasure of having to stay in a variety of flea pits.

It´s an interesting idea. I´ve always thought it´s a shame that so many students are tucked away on the campus, and not that much a part of the town´s life.
