A man was left bloodied and shaken after a night-time robbery in a quiet village.

The incident took place in the main car park in Coggeshall, off Market Hill.

It is believed the victim and the attackers had been involved in a dispute prior to the robbery.

The victim’s mobile phone and wallet were stolen in the incident, which happened at about 10.50pm on Saturday.

Clive Smalls, owner of the Chapel Inn pub, on Market Hill, said: “We saw the victim roaming around in the pub car park, next to the main car park .

“He was in a very bad way, covered in blood and with shoe prints all over him.

“The paramedics and police were called and they attended very quickly. The police did a fantastic job.”

David Griffiths, a handyman for Coggeshall Parish Council, said: “It is startling to hear about this, because it is something that happens so rarely in a place like Coggeshall.”

A police spokesman said: “We are investigating the incident. “The officer in charge still needs to speak to the victim.

“No arrests have been made at this stage.”
