A NEW cycle path linking Wivenhoe to Essex University has moved a step closer.

The university has agreed to contribute £250,000 to the project as part of plans to build a 777-space multi-storey car park at its Wivenhoe campus.

The cycle path would start at Wivenhoe fire station and run parallel to Colchester Road to the campus.

Julie Young, county councillor for Wivenhoe, who has campaigned for the path, said: “I’m delighted. After such a long wait it looks like we may get the cycle link so many people in Wivenhoe have wanted.

“I’m really pleased my suggestion to link the developments of the car park and the cycle path has been taken forward, and I am sure this will be well used.”

The four-storey car park, next to the university sports centre, is wanted to meet a projected increase in demand for spaces.

Colchester Council planning officers have backed the plans.

Previous proposals were recommended for refusal based on the design and the lack of a financial agreement to provide cash for the projects in the community.

Essex University will provide the money from contributions as part of its ongoing expansion, known as the Knowledge Gateway project.

It will also contribute money to improve the Greenstead Road roundabout.

A university spokesman said: “This would be the first time parking provision has been significantly increased at the university since it was first established almost 50 years ago.

“We are extremely supportive of the plans to create a shared cycle path and footpath.

“We are discussing ways in which we might help to fund the early delivery of this project.”

The car park plans have been redesigned with a green exterior to help it match its surroundings.

Colchester Council’s planning commitee will decide on the application next Thursday.
