FORMER Britpopper-turned-cheese maker Alex James is fronting a campaign to find a national anthem for the nation’s favourite cheese.

The former Blur bassist is now an award-winning cheese maker and is the face of the British Cheese Board campaign.

Mr James, a former Colchester schoolboy, said: “It’s important to be buying British right now, and cheddar truly represents the best of British cheese as it was invented right here in the UK.

“This is a fun way to support British Cheddar and combine two of the best things in life, in music and cheese.”

Hopefuls must pen original lyrics set against God Save the Queen, Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem.

Entries must be submitted by June 15 in video or audio format to enquiries@britishcheeseboard.com.

A public vote on britishcheese.com will run on the site until July 20.

The winner will win two weekend passes to the former bassist’s Food and Music Festival, in the first week of September and will also take home a year’s supply of cheddar.
