Steven Gillespie is hoping his two-goal salvo against Brentford will secure him a recall to Colchester United’s starting line-up.

The 26-year-old has his sights set on a starting place, after coming off the bench to bag a brace and help the U’s secure a 2-1 win over the Bees.

Gillespie has now scored four goals in his last four games for Colchester.

And the skilful striker is desperately hoping his midweek double will earn him a return to the U’s starting line-up for their trip to Yeovil Town, this weekend.

Gillespie said: “You want to be starting games and I hope I’ve done enough to start on Saturday but that’s up to the manager.

“I was disappointed not to start and you don’t want to be on the bench.

“But you have to put that to the back of your mind and do a job for the team and try and make an impact.”
