Braintree: Tesco calm shoppers after rat sighting

8:50am Sunday 29th January 2012

Tesco have moved to reassure customers they do not have a rodent problem after a customer spotted a rat in the food aisles of a store.

Emma Aldridge, 25, of Templar Road, Braintree, saw the rat running through the Marks Farm store in Braintree.

She said: “I was right inside the store doing my shop and I saw it on the floor down the aisle where the eggs were.

“I told the management and they just said they were dealing with it.

“How can they stay open and not even tell customers they’ve got a problem? It ended up running along right next to all the fresh bread.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “Regular checks take place and we can confirm there are no problems at this store.

“We think the rat ran into the store from the outside. The authorities were alerted and they were happy for the store to stay open.

Other shoppers were unconcerned by the sighting.

Joanne Hollands said: “What do you expect? It's built on what was once a farm in open country, it’s wildlife.”
