I have written to Colchester Council questioning Exquisite Entertainments’ application for a sex entertainments venue licence in St Botolph’s Street, Colchester.

It is bad enough to see the ever-growing number of burger bars and nightclubs.

But once you allow this sort of business in our town centre, it will only be a matter of time before St Botolph’s Street becomes a “red light” zone.

The council replied, saying: “The application is not for a new premise. Heaven, in St Botolph’s Street, has existed as a “gentleman’s club” since it was taken over by Exquisite Entertainments over two years ago.

“The club has been well run since that date and no complaints of any kind have been received. Due to the adoption of new legislation, they must make application for a licence under the new regime. Such application had to be made prior to January 31, 2012.

“While the council has the ability to consider more matters in determination of the application than under the old Act, we retain a duty in law to accept any application that is properly made and to consider that application in full and on its merits.”

It is shameful that, in its reply, Colchester Council states it is “not permitted to consider moral objections”.

It is irrelevant such a business has been permitted for the past two years.

Just because most of the public, including myself, were not aware of this firm operating does not mean it is acceptable.

If Colchester Council wishes to allow such a business to continue, then the lack of moral authority of this unpopular civic authority is clearly demonstrated.
