WHEN Michael and Michelle Merrett’s son, Christopher, was diagnosed with a severe dairy allergy they realised there was a gap in the business market.

The couple set up a company from their home in Haverings Close, Colchester, selling allergen-free produce.

It proved such a hit in its first year they have now opened a shop.

Allergy Free Foods and Alert Bracelets is based at Colchester Business Centre, in Magdalen Street.

Mr Merrett said they wanted to support parents going through the same thing.

He said: “All our products are free from the top 14 allergens.

“What has been so good about setting up the business is the number of parents from Colchester and further afield who have said how wonderful it is they can pick up anything from our shelves and know it is safe for their child.

“Having a base in Colchester is fantastic, and we want people to come in and get advice too.”

Christopher, two, is allergic to dairy products, wheat, egg and soya and dust mites.

His allergies were so bad he could get ill by touching a shopping trolley.

The shop is open from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Sunday.
