Security boss Michael Herlihy on tackling night-time Colchester's bad reputation

Binge drinking – is it worse in Colchester than any other town? Binge drinking – is it worse in Colchester than any other town?

I RUN one of the biggest security companies in this part of Essex – providing door staff for some of the major nightspots – so I see a side of Colchester life which some might prefer not to.

But I’m proud of this town. I think it’s a great place to live, so why are people so down on Colchester?

Here’s an example.

When we were in the news over the summer for applying to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Independent newspaper called it “audacious” to compare ourselves to the pyramids or Stonehenge.

They weren’t as rude as the Guardian, who said our town centre at night looked like a “documentary on Britain’s Binge Drinking Hell”. I don’t think that’s anything like fair.

I know what you’re thinking. I shouldn’t read the Guardian.

But it’s not just them. People here call Queen Street “Kebab Alley”, as if it’s some sort of no-go area.

It has its problems, but I think that’s an unfair tag. In fact, I’m working with Osman Rasih, who owns the Silk Road Lounge Bar, to revitalise that part of town. We’re approaching every business along there to offer our services – working together to make it a safer, cleaner and a nicer place to be at night.

The easy option would be to ignore it, or to reduce licensing hours. But if you’re proud of your town and want it to be at its best, you’ve got to be practical.

If you cut licensing hours, you don’t get rid of the problems, you just bring them forward an hour or two.

The night-time economy is an important part of life here – and a vital part of any local economy.

If we cut opening hours or try to shut places down, we deprive the people who work there of their livelihoods.

Some of the businesses along here struggle as it is – and this is a time when we all want to see the economy growing. That’s why Osman and I are working on this taskforce.

We know the area’s not perfect, but we don’t think it deserves its current reputation – and we believe we can turn it around. The local police have given us their blessing.

In fact, this all came about after a meeting with them to discuss the licensing hours at the Silk Road. The police and the crime reduction partnership want to reduce drinking-up times, and call this a “stress area”.

Antisocial behaviour is a serious thing, and any incident which disturbs people living nearby – in Priory Street, for example – is one too many.

But I don’t believe Queen Street is anything like busy enough to justify the “stress area” tag. I think it’s another example of us talking the town down.

So, this is my manifesto, if you like. Most town centres see a bit of noise and rowdiness at night. I don’t think ours is any different.

In other words, I don’t think it’s better or worse. But it’s not perfect, and together we can do something about it. My role is to work professionally with these local businesses and their customers, and have my trained, licensed team on the streets later – until 4.30am – that’s what’s needed.

The businesses need to play their part by working with us to make sure everybody plays the game – alerting us to any potential problems before they have a chance to escalate.

My employees are trained in customer service and conflict management – we know how to bring situations to a halt with the minimum of hassle for all involved.

And everybody else? Well, being proud of where you live means taking responsibility – and that means everyone who eats or drinks in town at night thinking about their actions.

In New York in the Nineties, they cracked down on minor problems like graffiti and saw a significant drop in overall crime.

So let’s work together and recognise this is a great place to live. It’s still a fairly small town, with a real sense of community.

Let’s acknowledge when it’s not perfect, and pledge to make it better. But let’s believe in the place, too.

The oldest town in England? Let’s make it the envy of England.

Why does this article not mention St Botolphs Street. Kebab alley is not just Queen Street. The Slik Road Bar mentioned in this article is at number 4 St Botolphs Street! Mr Herlihy does not know what he is talking about Colchester is not a small town it is one of the largest towns in Essex. It is not just Queen Street and St Botolphs Street that is a no go area in the evening, the High Street is a no go area in the evening too! Why has the Gazette chosen to print this story a second time?

The envy of England………….
.I was in Town on Saturday night and was waiting for a taxi outside the Town Hall when a couple of worse for ware lads came down the road and one started urinating on the Town Hall steps in front of me and my partner.

A young lady who was out with her friends was waiting for a taxi and asked to sit with us because other young lads were give her some abuse and she did not want to wait alone.

Let’s make Colchester the envy of England said Mr Herlihy ………….don’t think so, Colchester is a lovely place but at certain times it is a **** hole and this seriously spoils Colchester. Needless to say Mr Herihy has an alterative motive because after all he makes money from protecting pubs and clubs from the type of scum who **** up the Town Hall steps; but who protects our Colchester………
…..exactly……
NO ONE!

**** off Herlihy you are having a laugh!

There aren't any "no go" areas in Colchester. Walk where you like, when you like, and nobody will touch you. You may see deplorable sights like that described by Council Man, but that doesn't mean you can't go there. This is not Beirut or Bogotá. It is ugly little old Colchester, it is our town, and we go where we like, when we like.

If you feel you can walk where you like when you like Boris you are braver than me and a lot of people I know who live in Colchester.

It's not a case of being brave, Boris is correct. You can walk anywhere, anytime in Colchester. Just don't engage in conversation with the chavs :)

I agree with Mr Herlihy and Boris. Colchester may have its bad points but i can tell you now it is no different to any other town in England on a Friday/Saturday night. For the other five days of the week the town is a relatively quiet and safe place to live regarding its size. It by no means makes bad behaviour acceptable but put it into perspective its not as bad as it could be. The weekend always brings out the worst in people but its hardly carnage down there. You can easily walk from one side of town to the other at night without too much worry. I dare you to do that in many other similar size towns or suburbs in this country!!! The fact that the majority of the population of Colchester have arrived here through work/army/resettled/
commuting etc etc makes the town a very soft target for having a chip at as no-one wants to defend it so well done Mr Herlihy for doing so.

It would be nice to see landlords thinking about stopping serving drunks and taking responsibility for their customers actions and not just checking drunks onto the street to cause grief.

I have read the comments both for and against, central colchester at night.
They are like a remake of comments on other party night destinations elsewhere.
Colchester, you are not special, nor are you alone.
Central Romford is one such area that has "had it all" and has now thankfully lost most of it too.
In it`s hey day leading up to the early 2000`s, it was chaos.
Then large clubs closed, or got closed, and now it`s just about acceptable.
In ten years, fortunes change, lets hope your colchester changes for the better also.
Q, do I, or would I, ever go into colchester at night.
A, nope, not on your nelly.
Sorry if i offend some with my comments, but thats the way it is,
as I see it.
thank you.

It's a bit ironic to read the owner of a bouncer company saying things really aren't that bad. I've lived all over the UK, and I do think Colchester has a nasty, pronounced booze culture at night. Such a dense concentration of pubs, clubs and junk food shops is inevitably going to lead to problems. Many of us middle-aged types aren't that interested in going out at night, but we have to suffer the aftermath. Sat, Sun, Mon mornings, Mersea Road and St Botolph's are a sea of polystyrene boxes, half-eaten kebabs, vomit, smashed glass. Has anyone seen the state of Flagstaff Rd recently? Anywhere else, it would be condemned as a public health hazard. The vagrant/drunk/addict gatherings are unpleasant and no one will do anything about enforcing drinking bans even where they've been granted. The general decay, litter and grafitti everywhere, are signs, surely, of years of bad government? Town station is dirty, often filthy, full of drunk chavs at weekends. Say what you like, but large groups of p****d-up lads and screaming girls ARE deeply intimidating to many of us. Things really aren't going to improve by suggesting it's all a matter of perception.

We can't afford to deal with this problem. Our money is tied up with building the VAF and funding the wasters at firstsite / 15queenstreet / creativecoop / slackerspace etc. What is it now? £30 million for VAF. Colchester Council is a joke. Please Gazette, dig into this fiasco. I know that some of your ex-employees are now employed to promote these doomed projects, but you need to realise that your duty is to the wider community. Expose the incompetency and shameful waste of public money and Colchester residents will appreciate your endeavour.

Well well Mr Jack Anory defender of Jawick the arson capital of Essex telling us that our town isn't safe and the usual ofer the top exaggerated nonsense from Seco2. I agree with Boris this town is more than safe if your own paranoia and mis trust of young people prevents you going out at night then that is your problem. Every major town has problems with drunks etc but lets not forget he thousands of people that go out each and every weekend cause no trouble and leave no litter rather than taking the actions of a minority and blowing them out of all proportion.

The Enforcer says...
11:29am Thu 14 Oct 10

2,700 soldiers from the Town are off to Afghanistan over the next week so the Town will improve considerably at night. Soldiers are the biggest problem in Colchester. I also think the Doormen themselves are a big problem. They stand there looking fat and ugly and chewing gum and dont take any responsibly for the people they kick out of their premises, often wound up from over zealous Doormen.

11:50am Thu 14 Oct 10

As I said earlier, you may see deeply unpleasant, even disgusting, sights in Colchester town centre late at night, but you have nothing to be afraid of provided you don't provoke trouble. On the other hand I spent several hours in daylight in Jaywick recently, and I found that quite intimidating. It's not the people, who are fine. It's their fierce dogs. These brutes may be effective as guard dogs, but almost everyone seems to have them, and some of them look as if they could break out quite easily, and then you'd be in trouble.
Comparing Colchester at 3 am with Jaywick at 3 pm, Colchester feels safer.

When I was travelling home from North Station (I used to wprk in London) I had to change buses in the high street. Between six oclock and seven in the evening Monday to Friday it was a regular thing to see drunken men and woman, people throwing up and fights. I have been at the bus stop when drunken youths have come over and started verbally abusing people. Once a drunken yob attacked one of my fellow passangers and had to be pulled off by his mates. No one had provoked the yob.

....Between six oclock and seven in the evening Monday to Friday it was a regular thing to see drunken men and woman, people throwing up and fights.....
I don't think so perhaps the occasional scuffle or someone vomiting but to say it was a regular thing is once again exaggeration for exaggerations sake. No one is saying that these things don't happen but again put them in perspective there are thousands of people who go out have a good time and cause no problems at all.

Bad hair day??? glad you are still as deluded as ever Mr B.
I just thougt it odd that you would be so afraid of colchester at night coming from an area that suffers many arson attacks i'd rather walk through a group of drunks tan sit in my "shed" wondering if it was going to be the next one torched. Oh Boris, yes, found your tongue in cheek reply funny too. I actualy enjoy colchester, in the daytime.
I enjoy watching the hustle & bustle of people rushing about in there daily lives, I get into central town, park for free in the motor bike parking areas, sit outside a pub eating my huge burger king.
(i do place my litter in appropiate bins after SD)
Then ride home in satisfaction that many are paying enough tax to keep my pension topped up.
Oh what a great life it all is at my age eh.
Then at night, in warm summer evenings, look out over our safe sea wall, in peace and quiet, look towards the light source illuminating the night sky over COLCHESTER, and remember your comments SD, and laugh, laugh quite a lot at times....

Ah Boris, just to correct you:-
"Comparing Colchester at 3 am with Jaywick at 3 pm, Colchester feels safer".
As I get weekly reported crime figures, for the WHOLE of Tendring sent to me as an area co ordinator of Neighbourhood Watch, Neighbourhood Action Panel member, and of course, committee member of the succesfull Jaywick Forum, (look it up) I CAN say, very little crime does take place in the whole of Golf Green, (Jaywick)
Our very succesfull 24 hour
dispersal zoned areas have been renewed without hesitation by TDC, (COLCHESTER could do with even more of them) after essex police requested them yet again for the 3rd 6 month period.
Hype, reported in/on whatever media you like, is just that, hype, whereas, this thread IS accomponied by pictures on current COLCHESTER`s goings on Boris.
But we thank you for your concerns, abeit wrongly.

I think your use of the word "we" and the fact you like to spend time laughing to your self and lets not forget the trhreats you have made to me and other posters on this site is a true reflection of your mental state. And I'm sure you are right that in general Jaywick has very little crime, but what about arson? It must surely have far more cases of that than the rest of Essex.

Thought I would get that in before Anna Key did.

Colchester is no worse than any other town. I staggered through there off my face at 1am Saturday and had no problems getting a cab, nor did I see any trouble. People have been staggering round drunk on Saturday nights for centuries. The only difference is now we the expensive CCTV system so there should be no trouble of any kind that is not actionable.
