Stadium home plans fall foul of cutbacks

PLANS to build a sheltered housing complex at the former home of Colchester United have been dashed – and the site is set to be put up for sale once again.

Colchester Council had hoped to get cash from the Homes and Communities Agency to build the home on the Layer Road site.

But with the agency facing a massive reduction in its budget due to Government cutbacks, the authority is again proposing to sell the site to the highest bidder.

This has been tried once before to help offset the cost of building the Weston Homes Community Stadium, but hopes were dashed when the recession hit.

Bosses then devised the sheltered accommodation scheme, which involved handing the land to a housing association, in order to address a lack of managed properties for older people.

Ralph Martin, whose flower shop is close to the disused and crumbling football stadium, said he was disappointed the sheltered housing plan had failed.

He said: “I thought the nursing home plan would have been perfect for that site.

“I know no one’s got much money at the moment, but life still goes on and I’m surprised a solution couldn’t be found.

“It is important that something is done, because, at the moment, the football ground is just empty space.

“The condition of the building is getting worse and worse and it is no good for the area, or for trade.

“We are still here and we have a good business, but we won’t recover the match-day trade we lost until something is built there.”

Paul Smith, councillor responsible for resources, confirmed the cabinet was to be presented with a request to put Layer Road back on the market.

Some people have stacks of money - many who caused the economic problems in the first place ;-( It's getting them to spend it on projects helpful to others that is the problem!

There would not be the need for cutbacks if the money was not wasted in the first place! £3m by the NHS for out sourcing, most of that on solicitors to stop them being sued for negligence, how about doing the job properly in the first place? Millions of £'s for police officiers that are suspended, one has been suspended in excess of four years, I bet he loves it? Then there are those that are off with stress, how many of us ordinary folk would get paid anything in those circumstances?

Since when was the old Layer Road ground ever called a stadium!

Thought when I looked at the headline that they were talking about housing around the Weston Homes Stadium.

Ground, stadium, two different words for the same thing. Layer Road was a better stadium than the one at Cuckoo Farm.

Layer Road was a tip, but nonetheless a good place for atmosphere. I know all-seaters are the way forward, but standing on the Barside taunting the opposition fans and players was always good fun! Players don't like it when the crowd is that close. I never saw the changing-rooms, but I don't suppose they were a great preparation for away players used to grander places. These things can make a difference.

There are pictures showing the pitch as it is now, and it's really sad to see. Could it not be used as a green space while plans are re-thought about the long-term future?

The changing rooms were prehistoric but a great leveler as some good clubs found to the horror! There was some great Friday nighters and always a brilliant atmosphere. We all know that things have to move on but history is a fabulous thing in football.
